Dentistry
Dentistry is extremely important for the health of the older horse and the performance of younger horses. Our horses are living longer, more productive lives
which makes good dentistry even more important. Horses continually erupt tooth their entire lives so dentistry at a young age impacts their teeth when they
are older. The quality of tooth impacts the ability to eat grain, hay, pasture and treats like carrots and apples as your horse ages. Teeth are very important
for optimum performance as well. Fast turns, soft mouths, happy while being in the bridle are all easier with well cared for teeth.
Imaging
Digital Radiography
Springhill Equine offers digital radiography (x-rays) using the Metron system. Metron was designed
by equine veterinarians for equine veterinarians so we can do some pretty amazing stuff. Many of
our laminitis cases involve frequent radiographs to help guide the farrier and Dr. Lacher or Dr. King
with treatments. Metron allows us to easily take numerous measurements such as support surface
percentages, sole depth, hoof wall thickness and more. But even more amazing it allows us to take a
radiograph and a picture of your horse's hoof and morph the two so you can easily see how the
changes we make to the hoof affect your horse's movement and comfort.

Radiographs can guide us to an infected tooth, help us examine your horse's cervical (neck)
vertebrae and show arthritis in joints just to start. Our veterinary clinic is an ideal location with its
darkened area, heavy duty electric supply and stocks. These factors combine to allow us to shoot the
perfect x-ray with minimal stress to you and your horse.

Reproduction Services
We are pleased to provide breeding services customized to your needs, be it for your backyard baby or a large-scale breeding facility. From
the initial ultrasound and breeding evaluation to pregnancy checks and twin reductions, we can help you with the entire process
emphasizing convenience for your schedule! We are pleased to announce our new breeding packages, which include all ultrasound exams
performed until ovulation is confirmed, tailored for your fresh, cooled-shipped, or frozen semen (1 or 2 doses). Breeding packages are
offered at our veterinary clinic in Newberry. We are also prepared to manage any post-breeding uterine inflammation. Our plans optimize
your resources, combined with the convenience and quality that you and your horse deserve. Our full range of breeding services are also
available at your farm.
We can also help you manage your mare through her pregnancy, including such things as vaccination, late-pregnancy checks (heartbeat,
fetal sexing, evaluation for placentitis), Caslick's suturing, and Foal Alert placement. For those concerned about the late-night demands of
foaling-out your mare at home, we're happy to announce our new foaling package. At home or the clinic, your bundle of joy should have a
foal exam and an IgG measurement, which indicates if the foal has received enough colostrum from his dam. If the IgG is too low, he may
require treatment with a plasma transfusion and antibiotics. The mare's placenta should be evaluated (so put it aside in a bucket!), and she
should be treated for any placental remnants present as soon as possible. Our goal is to help you get your precious foal on the ground safe
and sound!
Do you have a stallion that you breed commercially or to mares on your own farm? We can help you with stallion management too!
Whether you have a phantom at your farm, or prefer to have him collected at our clinic, we can evaluate and prepare for fresh
insemination, cooling & shipping, or freezing for shipment (coming soon*). Our lab is equipped for precise semen evaluation, including
concentration, motility (how they move) and morphology (how they look). We can train your stallion to collect on our phantom, and perform
blowout collections if it's just been too long!
Lameness Services
Is your performance horse just a little off these days, or did you go to feed your horse and suddenly he is
three-legged? We are prepared to address your lameness needs in the clinic or at your farm. We begin with a
lameness evaluation customized to your budget and your horse's needs. Watching the horse move on our
varied surfaces and in different shapes and directions gives us the first clues to localizing your horse's
lameness. A thorough musculoskeletal exam is performed to identify areas of sensitivity or asymmetry.
Regional nerve and joint blocks help diagnose the source of lameness by sequentially anesthetizing portions
of the leg from the hoof up. Our digitally computerized radiography system provides us on-the-spot results at
your farm or the clinc, and our upscale ultrasound system illustrates tendonitis, suspensory ligament
desmitis, and many more acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Once the source of the problem is
localized, we will help determine the best plan for your horse, be it injections with hyaluronic acid, steroids,
Legend, Adequan, stem cells or platelet rich plasma; or surgery, such as an inferior check ligament
desmotomy for management of navicular (caudal heel pain) syndrome. As is the old adage, "no foot, no
horse," so we are happy to consult with your farrier for sedation, pain relief, or radiography needs. Shawn
Jackson, a local farrier who has worked closely with Springhill Equine for many years, provides services in
corrective shoeing, with particular interest in management of advanced laminitis cases. We also offer
regenerative technologies such as iRAP, PRP and stem cells.

Digital Ultrasound
Ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice for soft tissue areas. Extensive training is required to properly position and obtain the images needed to guide
treatment decisions. Dr. Lacher and Dr. King both received extensive training during their internships and attend regular educational seminars on
ultrasound techniques. Dr. Lacher and Dr. King can also be found trying the latest techniques out on Dr. Lacher's horses. Areas commonly ultrasounded
include: deep digital flexor tendon, superficial digital flexor tendon, suspensory ligament with special attention to the proximal and insertion areas, check
ligament, stifle, fetlock/pastern area and the neck. Springhill Equine also performs ultrasound guided injections of cervical facets for neck arthritis and
sacroiliac injections. Again our veterinary clinic provides the ideal location with a special darkened area.
Endoscopy
Choking, noisy breathing, nasal discharge and nose bleeds are just a few indications for upper airway endoscopy. The complicated nature of the equine nose
is often best examined using endoscopy. Endoscopy allows us to see your horse's nasal passages, guttural pouches, trachea and esophagus, pharynx and
ethmoids. One of the biggest advantages to endoscopy is watching the anatomy function in "real-time." Watching your horse's larynx open and close or a
swallow reflex can quickly show the reasons for problems like choking or respiratory noise. Many tumors of the nasal passages and throat are best imaged
using endoscopy. Upper airway endoscopy can also demonstrate the presence of blood or mucous in the trachea pointing to underlying problems such as
EIPH (bleeder), heaves or inflammatory airway disease. Endoscopy is offered either at your farm or at our veterinary clinic. The clinic offers us stocks and a
darkened area for the fractious horse who may not appreciate being scoped.
Special Services
Among the many benefits our clinic offers are convenience and highly trained staff. If your horse should require advanced care following a surgical
procedure, injury or illness we are able to offer the advantages of veterinary staff without the referral hospital pricing. Following surgery or illness many
horses require frequent treatments, bandage changes or close monitoring. These can all be difficult while working, taking the kids to school and activities
and all the other things our busy schedules demand. In addition, with our staff you don't need to worry about treatments being done on time or difficult
wound care regimens. We have it covered. We also offer lay-ups for soft tissue injuries and even care for the high maintenance horse while you go on
vacation.
Due to the nature of equine teeth they are constantly changing shape, developing points, getting
little ridges and sometimes making big hooks and waves. We start all dental procedures by
administering enough sedation to make your horse drowsy but not profoundly tranquilized.
Included in each sedative is a pain reliever to help with any minor discomfort. Next a full mouth
speculum is placed and a bright light, mirror and dental probe (just like your dentist's, only
larger) are used to examine the entire mouth. We look, probe and feel all the nooks and crannies,
all the teeth, the gums and under the tongue. Once we have fully evaluated your horse's mouth we
perform a dental float with a Makita power float and a high speed dremel diamond coated burr.
Floating is the term used for filing the teeth in order to remove sharp points or alter abnormal
shapes. For horses it is equivalent to the dental cleaning your dentist recommends twice yearly.
Our equipment allows us to do a very thorough float with minimal trauma to both your horse and
your veterinarian. We constantly monitor the temperature of the equipment and move the floats
continuously to avoid any thermal issues. Reduced vibration is an added benefit of power
equipment. Our geriatric horses have short tooth roots so vibration from hand floats will
"wiggle" the tooth causing discomfort. By using high speed equipment and the cutting power of
diamonds we are able to minimize vibration and rapidly reduce any extraneous tooth.
If we find more significant problems during our oral exam, we are able to perform intraoral x-rays to pinpoint the area affected. Many times these areas can
be addressed with systemic antibiotics, adjustment to adjacent teeth and direct placement of antibiotics. Occasionally a tooth will need to be extracted. If an
extraction is required Dr. Lacher or Dr. King will place a local and regional nerve block in place to numb the area. Pre-treatment with pain medication is
started and an IV drip of sedation is used to ensure your horse's comfort during the procedure. Following extraction, we closely monitor your horse for the
next 24 hours in our equine hospital to ensure prompt treatment for any complications which may arise.
Springhill Equine recommends dental exams every year with floating generally performed yearly on horses under 12 years of age. Horses over 12 years are
evaluated at their yearly exam and based on lifestyle and type of activity floating may be needed yearly or every other year. Brief dental exams are part of
every routine care visit we perform.
